Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
